1. Teaching an existing module a new key

This is the most common and the least expensive version. The anti-theft computer in your car is healthy. It simply has not met the key you are holding. The equipment connects, authenticates, and the module adds the new key to its list of approved ones.

Nothing is replaced. Nothing is flashed. This is the job that happens inside almost every key replacement and spare-key appointment, which is why it rarely appears as a separate line item — when you buy a key from us, this is bundled into the key price rather than charged twice.

It becomes a standalone job in one situation: you already have a key that fits and turns, it just is not recognised. That happens with online-purchased keys, keys from a donor vehicle, and keys that were programmed to a different car.

2. Remote and keyless entry only

Worth separating because it is frequently confused with the above and it is a different system. The remote that unlocks your doors and the transponder that lets the engine run are two independent functions that happen to live in the same plastic shell.

3. Replacing the module itself

This is where the price climbs, and where most of the bad outcomes we get called to fix originate.

A body control module or immobilizer module out of another vehicle is, from your car's perspective, a stranger. It arrives carrying another vehicle's identity. Bolting it in and turning the key does nothing useful — the other modules on the network check its credentials, it fails, and the car sits there. The module has to be programmed to your VIN before the vehicle will accept it.

We see this monthly: somebody buys a used module from a marketplace listing, installs it, and the car is worse off than before. The part may be perfectly good. It is simply not theirs yet. 4. Powertrain-side programming

Flashing a PCM or ECM is a heavier job than body-side work, but on Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler and Dodge it generally sits in the same $150–$400 band because the tooling support is mature. The engine computer receives calibration data and is matched to the vehicle's security system so that the immobilizer and the engine controller agree about which keys are legitimate.

There are two honest caveats. First, some newer model years and some dealer-locked calibrations genuinely require a franchised dealer, and no third-party tooling changes that. What moves your price within the band

How the manufacturer secured the module. Some platforms let an authorised technician write to the module directly after authentication. Others require security credentials obtained through the framework the National Automotive Service Task Force maintains, plus enforced waiting periods. Both are legitimate; the second costs more in time.

Whether the module is new, used or repaired. A new module from the correct part number is the cleanest path. A used module can work well but has to be cleared of the donor vehicle's identity first, which is extra work. A repaired module varies with what was wrong with it.

Whether keys are involved too. If the module is replaced, the vehicle's key list usually goes with it, which means the keys have to be re-learned afterwards. Doing both at one visit is cheaper than two visits.

Symptoms that point at the immobilizer rather than the key

You can narrow this down before anyone connects equipment.

  • A security or anti-theft light stays lit or blinks and the engine cranks but will not run. Classic immobilizer refusal. The starter is fine; fuel or spark is being withheld on purpose.
  • The engine starts and dies within two or three seconds. The car recognised something briefly, then rejected it. Strongly immobilizer-flavoured.
  • A second key works and the first does not. The module is healthy. That one key is the problem — cheapest scenario on this page.
  • Neither key works and nothing changed. Points at the module or its wiring rather than the keys, especially after a battery event.
  • It started after a module was replaced. The new module has not been married to the VIN.

Where the money actually goes

It is reasonable to wonder why a job with no visible parts costs what it does.

Roughly, you are paying for three things. The equipment — programming tools for a working range of makes represent a substantial capital cost, plus annual subscriptions for calibration data and security access. The credentials — legitimate access to manufacturer security data requires vetting, licensing and per-transaction fees. And the time, which on secured platforms includes waiting periods the technician cannot shorten by working faster.

That last one surprises people. On some vehicles a genuine part of the job is a timer running while nothing appears to happen. It is not padding; it is the manufacturer's anti-theft design working exactly as intended.

What a fair quote looks like

You are entitled to know what you are agreeing to before a technician opens a tool case. A quote worth trusting has four parts, and any of them missing is worth a question.

The job named specifically. Not "programming" but "relearn two keys to the existing body control module" or "program a replacement BCM to your VIN." Those are different jobs at different prices, and a quote that will not distinguish them is not a quote.

The all-in total, including any after-hours surcharge. Work outside normal business hours costs more, which is reasonable. Discovering that at the end is not. Ask for the number that will appear on the invoice and expect a straight answer.

What happens if diagnosis changes the answer. On a suspected module fault the honest sequence is diagnose, report, then quote the repair. A shop should tell you up front what the diagnostic costs and whether it is credited against the repair.

Which parts are included. If a module is being replaced, is the module in the price or is the price for labour and programming only? Both are normal; only one of them is the number you were thinking of.

Why keys and modules are usually cheaper together

One scheduling note saves more money than any negotiation. When a module is replaced or reprogrammed, the vehicle normally loses its list of approved keys, which means the keys have to be re-learned afterward. That relearn requires the same secured session the module work already opened.

Doing both in one visit means paying for that session once. Splitting them across two appointments means paying for it twice, plus a second trip charge. There are three situations where we will say so on the phone rather than take the job:

  1. Dealer-locked calibrations. Some model years restrict programming to franchised dealers outright.
  2. Aviation, marine and heavy commercial equipment. Outside our scope entirely.
  3. A fault that is not actually a programming fault. If the underlying issue is wiring, a failed starter or a charging problem, programming will not fix it and we are not going to charge you to find that out slowly.
