On a push-to-start vehicle, the same split exists — the proximity antenna reading the key for start authorisation is a different circuit from the one handling unlock requests, which is why a fob can open the car and still throw "key not detected" at the button.
Because these are independent, a working remote tells you almost nothing about whether the car will start. That is the whole insight.
Narrow it down in five minutes
Work through these in order. Each one eliminates a branch.
1. What is the dash doing? Turn the key to the run position, or press start with your foot on the brake, and watch the security or anti-theft light. If it stays lit or blinks steadily while the engine cranks but never catches, the immobilizer is refusing — the starter is fine and the engine is being denied fuel or spark on purpose. If there is no security light and no dash activity at all, you are probably looking at power delivery or the ignition switch instead.
2. Does the engine crank? "Cranks but won't run" and "nothing happens at all" are completely different problems. Cranking means the starter, battery and ignition switch are all doing their jobs — so the fault lives in the security system or in fuel and spark. 3. Does it start and then die after two or three seconds? This is nearly diagnostic on its own. The vehicle recognised something long enough to fire, then changed its mind and shut the engine down. The ignition switch — not the cylinder — has failed electrically
This one gets missed constantly, and it is the reason this guide covers ignition repair rather than treating it as a pure security question.
Behind the lock cylinder you turn with your key sits an electrical switch. The cylinder is the mechanical part that accepts the key and rotates. The switch is the electrical part that rotation actuates. They fail independently. A cylinder can turn perfectly while the switch behind it fails to close the start circuit, which produces "key turns, dash lights maybe flicker, nothing else happens" — and no security light, because the security system was never energised in the first place.

It is not a key problem at all

Don't replace the fob battery and assume that fixed it. The fob battery powers the remote. Your remote already works — that is the premise of this entire page. A new coin cell changes nothing about engine security.
Don't buy a key online and expect it to work. An unprogrammed key is a blank as far as your car is concerned, and on many vehicles it also needs cutting to your specific pattern. The programming is the job; the key is the part.
Don't crank repeatedly. If the immobilizer is refusing, more cranking will not persuade it, and you will flatten a battery that was healthy — turning one problem into two.
